A Sanctuary
Suspended Between Sea and Sky

The Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity at the Split Mountain is a place of deep spirituality, nestled in the stunning natural landscape of Mount Orlando, Gaeta. It rises from the vestiges of the ancient Roman villa of Lucius Munatius Plancus (a commander in Caesar’s army) and takes its name from three majestic fissures in the rock, two of which can still be visited. Founded around 930 A.D. by Benedictine monks, the sanctuary has long been a sacred refuge for prayer and meditation. Pilgrims and visitors from all over the world come to experience its profound spirituality and rich history. Beyond the evocative Crucifix Chapel, the Sanctuary Church, and the Turk’s Cave, the site offers a spiritual journey where faith and nature intertwine, revealing breathtaking views of the sea. It stands as a beacon for those seeking reflection and inner peace, immersed in a setting where religion, history, and the marvels of creation come together in perfect harmony.

Among Gaeta’s Crags:
A Haven of Peace and Prayer

The Split Mountain and the Turk’s Cave offer a unique experience—walking through the majestic crags of Mount Orlando, where spirituality and nature intertwine in a path of faith and contemplation. This extraordinary place, shaped by its imposing rock fissures, has captivated pilgrims and saints for centuries. Among them was Saint Philip Neri, who, after withdrawing here in prayer, embraced his vocation, leaving a profound mark on the spiritual tradition of the sanctuary. The Turk’s Hand: according to tradition, a Turkish unbeliever, full of scorn, placed his hand on the cave’s stone wall—only to find that the rock softened like dough beneath his touch. His palm print remains there to this day, a powerful symbol of divine intervention. This episode, combined with the wild beauty of the landscape, makes the journey to the Split Mountain more than just a visit; it is a pilgrimage—an inner journey that invites reflection and prayer. The Turk’s Cave, a majestic, ogival-shaped fissure unlike any other, offers breathtaking views that heighten the sense of awe and wonder. The thunderous crash of waves against the rocks becomes a call to meditation, transforming the journey into an intense spiritual experience. Even today, countless pilgrims come here in search of peace, silence, and a deeper connection to the divine.

PIME in Gaeta

The PIME (Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions – in Italian, Pontificio Istituto Missioni Estere) has been present in Gaeta since 1926, playing a central role in the spiritual and social life of the community. For nearly a century, PIME missionaries have focused on Christian education, pastoral care, and spreading missionary spirituality. Today, their efforts continue to support young people and foreign missions. Founded in 1850 by Monsignor Angelo Ramazzotti, PIME is a society of apostolic life that operates worldwide, bringing the Gospel to regions that have not yet embraced Christianity. Its missionaries are active in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, working not only in evangelization but also in training lay missionaries and promoting human and social development. Cultural integration is at the heart of their mission. The Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity, in addition to being a site of spirituality and pilgrimage, also serves as a meeting point for PIME's mission. Here, we offer visitors an experience of faith rooted in tradition and open to the world.
