The Sanctuary Complex
Spirituality, History
and the Beauty of Creation

The origins of the Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity are intertwined with an ancient past and a spirituality that, over the centuries, has made this place a point of reference for those seeking the meeting of heaven and earth. On these cliffs overlooking the sea, during Roman times, stood the villa of the consul Lucius Munatius Plancus, whose cisterns still exist today as a testament to the grandeur of that era. Around the year 1000, drawn by the profound spirituality of this mountain, which according to long-established tradition split at the death of Christ, a group of Benedictine monks founded this place of prayer. Their presence marked the beginning of the Sanctuary’s history, which over the centuries became a destination for pilgrims and a center of intense popular devotion. In the 15th century, the complex was enriched with the construction of the Chapel of the Crucifix, a small church suspended between the rocks, built on a boulder that had broken off from the cliff and remained wedged about 40 meters above sea level. Even Saint Philip Neri had a deep devotion to this place, recognizing it as a privileged space for encountering God, a place that helped him embrace his vocation. For centuries, the Sanctuary has represented a symbol of faith and tradition—a place where the sacred and history intertwine, offering every visitor an experience of profound spirituality and beauty.
